ANNOUNCEMENTS FROM THE CEO, by Robert R. Tillman

o PLEASE UPLOAD YOUR GEDCOM NOW TO THE WORLDCONNECT PROJECT.
To date, RootsWeb users have uploaded 11,580,381 names to the
RootsWeb WorldConnect Project. Only 419,619 names to go to reach
the goal of 12 million by year end. RootsWeb can make it with
your help! Search the names already uploaded, upload your own
GEDCOM, or find detailed answers to questions about WorldConnect
at <http://worldconnect.genealogy.rootsweb.com/>

o Not sure what a GEDCOM is? GEDCOM is the acronym for
GEnealogical Data COMmunication, created by the Church of Jesus
Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons) to facilitate the exchange
of genealogical data among different software programs. A GEDCOM
is a text file that is created automatically in a special format
from information that is in a genealogical software program's
database -- no need to rekey. Most, but not all, genealogical
software programs have GEDCOM capability. For more information,
see <http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com/help/wc2.html#1>

o SEARCH AND YE SHALL FIND. I recently received e-mail from a
Mittelstadt researcher who complained that he could not find his
family tree on RootsWeb and indicated that he was off to use one
of the commercial subscription sites. I took his message as a
challenge and searched for the Mittelstadt surname on RootsWeb.
I made the assumption that he was interested only in the
spelling Mittelstadt and did not search for variations. We show
below the results of various searches on RootsWeb; however,
RootsWeb is much more than a giant search engine that is used to
brag about how many "names" it has. It is a community of avid
genealogists and volunteers who interact with and help others
daily on RootsWeb's 17,000+ mailing lists, 140,000+ message
boards, and hundreds of other volunteer genealogical projects
hosted on our servers. These people are the heart and soul of
RootsWeb, contributing their unique talents and time in many
ways to aid you in your genealogical quest

The following list is a template for doing a search on all of
RootsWeb's search engines. To follow the same process, simply
click on the URLs listed below. The Mittelstadt surname results
(the scores shown after each URL) are for Sunday, 26 December
1999. New material is added to RootsWeb every day, so be sure to
repeat your searches regularly. The information you have been
looking for these past 45 years might be uploaded somewhere on
RootsWeb five seconds after you've completed a search that came
up empty.

GRAND TOTAL SCORE: 597 Mittelstadt citations on RootsWeb on
26 December 1999, ALL free of charge ALL of the time.

There are many other German-related resources hosted by RootsWeb
that likely would be helpful to Mittelstadt researchers,
including the WorldGenWeb Project <http://www.worldgenweb.org/>,
the CenEuroGenWeb <http://www.rootsweb.com/~ceneurgw/>, the
international portion of the Roots-L Library at
<http://www.rootsweb.com/roots-l/regional.html>
and the Germany Visitors Center for GenConnect at
<http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/index/Germany.html>
There are also many non-search-engine-enabled resources on
RootsWeb, such as census file images at
<http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/census/> and
<http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/cen_img.htm>

o WHY "500 MILLION NAMES" MAY NOT BE ALL IT SEEMS. We have
recently seen claims of very large name counts by Genealogy
Site X (470 million names), Genealogy Site Y (500 million names)
and Genealogy Site Z (600 million names). Frankly, we have not
a clue how many "names" are on RootsWeb. Out of curiosity, we
performed the same Mittelstadt surname search on Genealogy
Sites X, Y, and Z. While a comparison of the results is hardly
scientific, it is enlightening.

Genealogy Site X -- Score 596. Of this total, 250 citations are
from the Social Security Death Index (a more recent version of
which is accessible on RootsWeb), 103 citations relate to
commercial CDs sold on Genealogy Site X containing user provided
data, 89 citations are links to other sites (including to
RootsWeb), and 84 citations relate to commercial genealogy CDs
sold on Genealogy Site X. The remaining Mittelstadt citations
total 70, which one can access for free. The cheapest price at
which one can purchase the 25 CDs upon which the 103 citations
are contained is $499.99. One could also subscribe online to the
contents of these CDs at $19.99/CD, a total of $499.75. The
cheapest price at which one can purchase the nine commercial
genealogy CDs upon which the 84 Mittelstadt citations are
contained is $379.90. Total cost: $879.65.

Genealogy Site Y -- Score 874. Of this total, 409 citations are
from current United States and European telephone books
(accessible elsewhere on the Web), 272 citations are from the
Social Security Death Index (a more recent version of which is
accessible on RootsWeb), 63 citations are from post-1990
obituaries, 22 citations are links to other sites (including to
RootsWeb), four citations relate to Wisconsin land records
(available on RootsWeb), and two citations are from the PR
Newswire (accessible elsewhere on the Web). The remaining
Mittelstadt citations total 102, for which a user normally must
pay an annual fee of $59.95 to subscribe.

Genealogy Site Z -- Score 93. These citations are all free of
charge.

                        A CHRISTMAS STORY

               by Sharon Blain <psblain@kanservu.ca>

On 22 December 1999 my husband was unable to get to sleep so
he decided to mess around on the Internet. The most recent
newsletter had just arrived from RootsWeb and he started
clicking on a variety of links that he had seen. One link that
he clicked on was a bulletin board on RootsWeb that we frequent
occasionally and look at, but don't pay much attention to. On
this site was an enquiry under the name SLAGHT that had just
been posted that evening. He called me into the room to verify
the query. Karol's request was to find her father who had last
been heard from in St. Thomas, Ontario. My husband remembered
that I had been to a funeral about two years ago for someone who
had sounded very familiar. At this funeral I met the daughter of
Alfred A. SLAGHT, who had come home for the funeral from British
Colombia. In the following days they spent a lot of time
together and "Judi" the daughter had indicated she had a half-
sister, but did not know her name or where she lived. On the
evening of 22 December 1999 I put 2+2 together, made the
connections, contacted both Karol and Judi to let them know what
I was doing, and on 23 December 1999 Karol and Judi had
confirmed that they were truly sisters. Tonight is Christmas Eve
and we have just received a call from Judi to say this is the
best Christmas she has ever had. Peter and I are having a very
tough Christmas but if anything can make it worth our while it
is that we were able to unite two sisters who have never known
each other. Warm and fuzzy doesn't even begin to explain how
we feel. Thank you RootsWeb.
