Recent E-Mail regarding NUNNALLY Surname linage.
09/22/2000

Dear (BOYKIN and SCOTT) Cousin John,
Knowing that there are excellent SCOTT researchers around (Alex LEE and "Scottie" SCOTT
come to mind immediately), I have concentrated on the earliest SCOTTs
(our "Patriarch," James SCOTT Sr, and his probable brother William SCOTT Sr* and their children)
and I did not branch out much until I got down to the family of James SCOTT Sr's ggson (my ggfather)
Thomas Henry SCOTT m1 Louisa A. BEARD m2 Sarah Elizabeth JEFFERS.  I recently began some
investigations of the families of James SCOTT Sr's children, particularly for the twosons that he had by
his m3 -- George Washington SCOTT and Benjamin Franklin SCOTT Sr.  I am forwarding some messages
that should help orient you as to your overall RAWLS & SCOTT ancestry through the latter of those two sons,
and tie-in the data that I have attached below -- the background that I have for each of your queries.
The completeness of the data, as you can see is quite uneven.  And I have not yet gotten to your
WILLISes (appears to be an Effingham Co GA connection).

I have run across the Rhett SMITH/Rhett SCOTT error for the husband of Mary Amanda NUNNALLY before.
Please let me know if your query stemmed from any propogation of that error on my part.

The number of cross-connections in this data with our own families (even so incomplete) is impressive.
Caroline Lucretia PENGREE SMITH was the sister of my gggmother Lousia PENGREE BEARD.
Benjamin Franklin SCOTT Sr was the much younger half-brother of my ggggfather Nathaniel SCOTT;
and the latter's son was Richard Perry SCOTT (I).  My wife is descended from a different branch of
that WOODRUM Family of Bulloch Co GA.  Although the exact relationship  of Paul Best ANDERSON is
an enigma, he is part of my wife's ANDERSON Family.  Iva Viola ROBBINS NUNNALLY was the elder
sister of my ggmother Mary Jane ROBBINS "Mollie," who m John Anthony BOYKIN Sr "Jack;" the latter's
1st cousin was John Wesley BOYKIN "Big."   Mary Catherine ANDERSON SCOTT was the younger
sister of my wife's gggfather, Hezekiah K. ANDERSON.  Through the SOWELLs, I may be a
BAZEMORE descendant, as well.

I faxed to you our portion of the 1964 BOYKIN book ; I was a bit reluctant to do so, knowing that there
are errors (some of them mine), but such family outlines without back-up proofs can serve as a guide in researching.
I am attempting to substantiate the data in those dozen or so pages to the extent that I can
(I recently found a missing m date in microfilm of an 1841 newspaper) -- that is why any contribution from
you (address below) would be appreciated (for BOYKIN or any other BES family), including a copy
and/or transcription of the Bible record(s) that you mentioned (can be cited as a source).

May God Bless You and Your Family,

Bob (John Robert) PEAVY

Note*:  Walter E. SCOTT "Scottie's" employment has taken him north to Eatonton GA,
and living in two places at once restricts his research and e-mail assistance.
But he remains THE researcher for the overall SCOTT family -- he takes all the branches of
James SCOTT Sr's family (and the BAZEMOREs and several others!) to modern times, a feat
that I have found, through my BOYKINs and my wife's ANDERSONs, to be very impractical
for me (my traditional cutoff was 1900, but I'm trying to include a bit more these days).

Dear Cousin John Peavy;         I have decided you are the answer to all difficult questions regarding my Screven County
ancestors.  In that vein, I have a couple of more questions.  I know from materials you sent me in the past that you have
conducted a great deal of research on the Scott family.  During my brief work on my family tree, I have discovered a number of
Scott relationships and would appreciate any additional information you might have on these individuals.

Rhett Scott who married Mary Amanda Nunnally b. 11/08/1851 (my g aunt)
.  I believe they had a daughter named Amanda but I know little else.

Ben Scott who married Laura Nunnally (b. 11/8/1845) another g aunt.

Robert L. Scott who married Nita Viola Boykin (b. 2/12/1880)

Susie Scott who married DBC Nunnally (my g grandfather)  (b. 2/15/1844)

Richard Perry Scott who married Maude Gertrude Nunnally (b. 5/7/1882

It looks like you couldn't separate the Nunnallys and the Scotts!  I have reviewed the materials you sent me on the
Boykins and did not find anything in the family Bible that you do not already have.  However, I would be happy to share any
information I have if you send me your address.  Thanks, John Overstreet

Walter L. Cullars 6/12/2000- I received snail mail from L.E.Nunnally.
Source was "Robbins & Related Families of the South" by Elizabeth Herrington.

Text was written in hand by "Red" Nunnally, and states verbatim.

"It is believed that John Arnett, ancestor of the Arnett family of Screven County(GA) was a son of
Major William Arnett, and a brother of Captn. Peter Arnett.  David Arnett, believed to be a brother of
John Arnett was killed in the Battle of Savannah at the time that Sgt. William Jasper was wounded."

Knowing what William Morgan had written about a William from PA, and four sons, I have been intrigued by all the east Georgia Arnetts. Specifically, the Peter Arnet of Anson County, NC.  Of course, "It is believed" is also a comment on what William Morgan had sent to the Anson County Historical Society.  However, these two lines of Arnetts do seem to run into
one another.

Peter Arnet  is in the North Carolina 1800 Census. "Believed" to be father of Jesse Arnett, and two, or three daughters.

In the text of the Robbins book, it says that Captn. Peter Arnet moved from Anson County, NC to Chester County, SC and served in the Revolutionary War.  The date of birth of Captn. Peter Arnet could match (1749 based on census) with the one in the Anson County census.

However, while the text goes into John, and William, and mentions David, it does not provide lineage for either the
Captain Peter Arnet, or David...

David, John, and Peter,  had land deeds in North Carolina.

Chester County SC (residence), and Chesterfield, SC (as listed for Service 1779)  would be of interest to research.

There is no mention of where John the patriot was born in the text of the book. (At least what was sent.)
However, I have that from the 1835/1840 GA census as a Participant in the American Revolutionary War, John was
born in Virginia(1760)...

What William Arnet, or Arnett was in Virginia before the earliest son was born about 1749 ?

I list an unknown daughter because of the 1790 census for North Carolina where William Arnet has two females in the household.  This could have been a servant.  He is about 69 in that census based on his birth between 1717 & 1725.

Sage McKenzie's work about William Washington Arnett says that John(1760) this patriot had a son David. This "Robbins" family book has children as Peter (1789), Timothy (1792), William, Robert, and Dicey.  A problem is that the ancestory of this Major William Arnet (from Pennsylvania)  does not fit to what has been written about David Arnett & Rhoda Tabitha Curlee Arnett, or William Washington Arnett's descendants. Therefore, her John Arnett, the father of Wm. Washington, is an Arnett, and is in the same early census in Anson County, NC.  Not John Arnet b.1760 burried in Screven Co, Ga.

I have not found a reference for Major William Arnet. (except from the book above.)

I am still trying to find a father for a William Arnett  that married Sarah Glaze 1804 in Wilkes Co, Ga. (another line.)
I am operating on the assumption that the headright of the Wilkes Co, Ga Arnetts was from SC, or TN.
And, now looking in VA for birth of John, Peter, David Arnet, and possibly William - the four sons
(unless William Washington Arnett was somehow related to Major William Arnet).

Note, I am not trying to place my ancestors to a patriot's lineage. I am trying to find out about the four sons of
William Arnett that has been a common thread for this lineage for over 15 years, and longer.
These people are from pre 1790...

Please reply with your comments...if you have knowledge to share.

Other lineage of Arnett from Fairfield, SC are being searched for any relation to this family.

Notes by Walter-6/10/2K :

1) Based on the belief that a William from PA came to NC via SC in 1774, one would think that he was born between
1717, and 1737 because of the  1749 birth of Peter.

 Found  from www.familysearch.org......

John born Virginia, therefore, look in Virginia for other three.
Found David Arnett b.abt1758 Russel, VA.
Found the known William B. Arnett b.abt1758 Virginia.
 Found William R. Arnett b.1762or1769 born Fredrickville,Louisa,PA.
Found William Arnett b.abt 1765 Rutherford, NC.
Found William Arnett b.abt 1775 VA. mar. to Mary Graves 1781.

2) If the headright of this family was born in either PA, VA, he would have been born abt1721.
He traveled to SC, into NC in 1774, age abt 53, and is found on the 1790, and 1800 NC census as a William with wife,
they are 69 years of age. In the later census, the family shows 2 females, possibly a daughter.

3) William Morgan placed Peter Arnet's birth 1749, and with the place of birth for John in VA, I looked with no result for
Peter, however Peter is in  the 1790, and 1800 NC census.

4) No related data about David Arnet in NC.  David died abt 1779 Battle of Savannah.
There are David Arnetts in the early NC census.  -that's all found info from LDS...

A) Unknown confimation about 1774 in SC with Fairfield Co, SC., Screven Co, GA,  or Wilkes Co, GA.
B) Wayne Co, Ga line with Timothy Arnett b1792.

My line of Arnett......
Peter Arnet 1749 VA. of Anson Co, NC
 Daughter
 Jesse Arnett b1796 NC
 Daughter
 Daughter

Jesse Arnett married Martha Jane Robertson ( they have a big family)  Jesse & Martha Jane moved to
Newton Co,Covington, Ga. stayed there about 13 years and moved to Chambers Co, Ala, then to Randolph Co, Ala.
where Jesse Arnett operated a Grist mill.  Burried in Rock Mills, Ala. For details see... http://ns1.dicomm.net/~cullars/genealogy.htm

I am sure of sons -A)  William b. cir 1767 - d. 5/5/1838,  B)David b. ? d.
"in the Battle of Savannah & buried in the Colonial Cemetery,
Savannah,"  C) John b. 6/20/1760, Anson County, NC, m. Sletyan, d. 1840
in GA, buried in the Waters Cemetery in Sylvania..&  D) Capt. Peter, b.
11/30/1749 in either PA or NC, moved to SC & served in Amer. Rev. under
Gen. Francis Marion " the Swamp Fox." I have notes that Maj. Wm. could
have had an additional son named Robert, but no further info.   I have
no info on any dtrs; however, from my reading, sons were more likely to
receive recognition & he could have later had a dtr????
John is buried in what was once known as the Arnett Cemetery -
located in Sylvania, now called the Waters Cemetery.(I have sketchy directions).
I have no evidence that any of these boys were born in VA.
Movements in this line seem to be from PA to NC, SC & then GA.  I'm not
ruling out MD or VA in between PA & NC??
Peter Arnett's 10 children were:
Robert b. 1815,  William b. 1820,   Betsy b. 1828,   George b. 1829,   Joseph b. 1831
Louis b. 1832,   Franklin b. 1837,  Sarah & Sinoi b.1838,  Caroline b. 1839.
Now to clarify, this Peter is one of the Amer. Rev. War soldier
mentioned above.  The Capt. Peter of Amer. Rev. was one of John's
brothers.  This Peter is Capt. Peter's nephew.  Although I have the
children of John's bro. William ( which is where Elaine & Wilson Arnett
brach off), I have nothing further on Capt. Peter.  The other bro.,
David, was killed in the Battle of Savannah. This Peter had his children
in Screven County.

This Peter (son of John) moved to Screven County when about 11 y.o.,
married Rebecca Hamm in 1812, thus his children wern't born in NC.

My information was gleaned from numerous sources:  Old correspondence
from Hattye White to Clyde Hollingsworth 6/4/55, an old
notebook of Mabel Williamson's w/out a date, estate records, pension
records, realestate sales & family notes.

I will write to the Cindi who replied on GenForum to your last question
6/15/00, as I am also interested in the possibility that some of the
sons of Maj. William could have been born in VA.  It might provide the
missing links to our mystery.

Do you have anything on the children of Capt. Peter?  I have copies of
Anson County Deeds stating that a Jesse Arnett bought & sold property
between 1829 & 1835.  My John ( a bro. of Capt. Peter), also bought &
sold property in the same vicinity in 1795.

I am not familiar w/ the border of NC & SC, but am wondering if Anson
CountyNC could be on one side of Crebs Creek & SC on the other.  In
other words, could there have been a change in the state lines at some
point in history??
